Some really nice textures going on in the background. I'd like for that main arp to evolve its sound a bit more but apart from that it's top notch! :)

Not sure why this is scored so low. Maybe add more wobs next time :P

This sounds really cool though. I am well and truly spooked! :D

Syrupmasterz responds:

Maybe they didn't like how the sounds come in a little bit too loud when it transitions to another part, listening back it's a little bit startling at higher volumes. As well I only have three votes right now, so it's not like this is universally hated. lol

Thanks mate!

This really reminds me of 'Blinx The Time Sweeper'.

So nice!

Such a nice and chill ambient track.

AveryMitchell responds:

Thank you JimPMusic .

This is such a nice piece!

The guitar adds such a cool warm tone to it and the strings/woods and high piano do a good job of setting a peaceful/romantic mood.

Have you tried adding a triplet feel shaker to one of the sections? It's just what I'm hearing would go in my head and I think it would add a nice contrast between two different sections.

I love the other subtle pieces of percussion you've used too though.

Great piece! :)

Calamaistr responds:

Pm me with what you consider a 'triplet feel shaker' im unfamiliar with the term. I wont edit any of these pieces anymore because they are already in the live game. :) Thank you for your kind words. -cal.

Looks like you've thrown all your eggs in one basket here! :P

This track is incredible though. I was completely into it from start to finish.

Just out of curiosity, did it literally take hundreds of hours to write? I can't even imagine how much detail you'd need to put in to spend that much time on it! :O

DetiousMusic responds:

We had a lot of fuckin eggs

To give you an idea we started the track in January. We had like the first 2 minutes (like 20 hours of work) but I just couldn't make a drop that fit. I spent like 3 months on just that and I know it took at least 40 hours of trial and error to make the first drop. Everything after that (breakdown, 2nd drop and 3rd drop) we made relatively quick. Like 40 hours total? Keep in mind this is the combined time of me sitting working on the song over 8 months so it's not too hard to believe. Then mixing/mastering took me like 20 hours hahahaha god I can't explain how many times I heard this track to get the mix right.

It was quite the journey

Very Nice track here! Would like to see a bit more variation in sections though. A nice part where the strings ring out the chords rather than playing arpeggios would have done wonders for a while.

Still impressed with what I'm hearing though. Just more variation and it would be perfect! :)

BurntOutOnlineMedia responds:

It's funny you say that because I did have a variation when I first started but I thought it was sounding too busy.

This is a very eerie and well written track with a lot of potential.

Composition wise, it has some really interesting components. To me it sounds like a horror theme from the more difficult level of a RPG with the development behind its repeating melody. All parts seem to suit this well, from the first sections brash staccato strings and eerie celeste*, to the second sections overpowering percussion and manic synth lines, these elements definitely add tension and maintain a high until the end.

But, while at the base you have the components of an eerie track, I believe there are some subtleties that are missed through the mix (which also contribute on the composition side of things) that would keep it from sounding more professional. It seems as though you've decided to add elements solely on 4 bar repeats which to me isn't building an gradual ramped and uncertain atmosphere, as it is stacking blocks on top of each other until it gets to its peak. In the introduction it would be especially effective if you were to have subtle instruments and atmospheres creeping in and out, this would leave me as the listener uncertain of where its going, which is definitely what you want if you're trying to make people pee their pants.

I'm sorry if I've been a bit cruel there. What I'm pointing out is definitely something I struggle with as well as its one of the hardest things to tackle when producing a track, but if you manage to add the right subtleties into places that would build the track in a way that the average listener would not consciously realise, then you can make the repetitive elements constantly develop in unexpected ways and really hold a persons. I think there's nothing wrong with the instruments you've used here, its just the atmosphere behind them I think is missing and thats definitely something that can be added in and developed if you want to do that

Great job anyway, man! I did enjoy this track. :)

*correct me if this isn't a celeste, I'm not sure here

lantaren responds:

First of all, thank you for taking the time to review this!

Yes, it is 4 bar blocks stacked on top of eachother for the most part - although the rhythmic patern is 7/4 and then 9/4 (which is more like 2/2 - 3/4 then 2/2 - 5/4 in terms of feel), and I was hopijg the modulation would be adequate enough on top of the somewhat complex polyrhythmic stuff I had going on.

Not a celeste - It's actually a really cool 'victorian music box' kontakt instrument that was for free download (you can google that if you want) on ambient setting. Probably the coolest little instrument I have in my library, despite being so simple.

I agree that adding things on a less linear way would be better, this is in pretty rough shape, only a couple of hours and no real afterword reflection like I usually will do.

This is really cool. Just started putting my own music on Newgrounds and have been checking out a lot of other artists here to check out the community is on this site. It's very interesting to have this podcast to hear the best of what's going on in the portal!

Keep up the good work man. I'll be listening regularly! :)

YouriX responds:

Good to hear!! Thank you for the kind words :)

Really cool track here. I'm going to have a go reviewing it similarly to how you did mine. :)

The mix is incredibly tight. Everything sits together really well. The only thing I would say is that making the kick quieter but side-chaining it to the rest of the instruments would have worked better than making it loud as it does draw your attention away from other elements of the track a bit.

Compositionwise, everything fits together very well. You have different instrument layers on top of each other that play well with each other. I believe some of this is to do with way they sit in the mix but either way it works. You've done a great job of subtly going outside of the major scale in parts.

The feel of it really reminds me of Danny Baranowsky's work for Super Meat Boy, but with a more energetic tempo. This would work very well as a fast paced track for a fast paced video game.

One more thing is that I like the final drum fill and the way it loops. However, the first cymbal right at the beginning should be just as loud and distorted to make the transition smoother.

Excellent track anyway!

TheMightyApple responds:

Thank you for your review!

I think you are right about the kick. Maybe in the future I will mix it again on good monitors and fine tune everything. It's always nice to have a second look on the mix ;)

I never even thought of making the first crash distorted for a better loop, gonna try that out!
and FUCK YEAH for Danny Baranowsky :)

Thanks again ^^
